There is something very critical about the American system of government and why a president is so important.
Beyond the obvious leader of the executive branch of government, there is something else very American about selecting that leader.
We vote for a person, and at the largest extension, a person and a partner — the president and vice president.
This will be short and sweet because it isn’t often I (and many older people) have the occasion to write about such things.
When I looked out my kitchen window last week, I saw a medium-sized branch across my side of the driveway that prevented me from getting the car out of the garage.
Farmers and ranchers in Kansas are amazing people. Yes, I am tooting our own horn, but we deserve it. We are hard-working and all too humble people, and the work we do is something our fellow humans literally cannot live without. We grow food.
I say all of this because my colleagues in agriculture will not. I know they are too busy working long hours doing their job, including working up to seven days a week. We wait for someone else to acknowledge our good work, and that is an admirable trait. So, I am going to say it for all of us.
KPI has proposed a new model for the state’s woeful at-risk program. There are numerous reasons that a new approach to improving the achievement of the at-risk population is imperative: low achievement, with accompanying high achievement gaps; little or no accountability; and spending that is not targeted to those students, among others.
There is a long history of courts upholding the decisions of professional teachers and librarians.
In 1886 Indiana, Andrew v. Webber upheld the requirement for students to attend music classes despite parental objections. In 1923 in Meyer v. Nebraska, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a state law prohibiting foreign language courses was unconstitutional. During the AIDS education era in 1995, the First Circuit Court upheld a requirement that students must attend an AIDS education presentation.
