Should Kansas pass Medicaid expansion? That is the question.

Proponents argue that expansion will bring more Kansans under healthcare coverage and boost the state’s economy. However, a closer examination reveals a troubling picture. Medicaid expansion would saddle Kansas with unsustainable costs, strain the healthcare system, and hinder future economic growth—all without significantly improving healthcare quality.

Last week the Seward County Commission failed to pass a budget for the upcoming year after Chairman Scott Carr moved to approve the budget with an 8 mill increase and no other commissioner seconded the motion.

It’s understandable why. It’s a significant increase in one year even after the commissioners whittled away at what was first presented as a 20-mill proposal.

I remember going to clothing stores years ago and buying new clothes. But about the time I stopped wearing business suits and flying in airplanes for work, I started going to used clothing stores. Then I discovered online consignment stores and, since then, I’ve hardly bought a new item of clothing except socks and shoes and underwear.

Farmers all around the country are in harvest mode. Harvesting our dryland corn was quick and smooth. Moving to the first field of sorghum, which was beautiful and looked ready to go, but the moisture tested too high by a few percentage points. The wait was frustrating. The days drug on with a sprinkle of rain one day and others that weren’t hot or windy enough to dry the crop. Going back and forth in a combine can feel like time is dragging on, but cutting a load or two and then having to stop and try tomorrow day after day can feel excruciatingly slow.
