Zoey Torres had a strong day at the plate for the Lady Redskin softball team, but without additional support the Lady Redskins were not able to earn a Western Athletic Conference win against Garden City Thursday and dropped a pair to the Lady Buffaloes.
Liberal was competitive in Game 1 but fell short 7-3.
Torres had a two-for-three performance at the plate.
Madalynn McCarter had Liberal’s only other hit in the loss.
The Liberal Redskins traveled to Guthrie, Okla., Thursday for the first round of the Guthrie 89ers Tournament and came away with a first-round win over the host school, 4-2.
Brooks Kappelmann pitched the win, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine in five innings.
Zayden Martinez came on in relief in the sixth and final inning and did not allow a run or a hit while walking one and striking out three.
Seward County softball continued their winning streak on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep over the Pratt Beavers where in both games the two teams entered the seventh tied before the Lady Saints managed to squeak past their opponents to grow their win streak out to eight.
Pratt struck first with an RBI double in the top of the first of game one to push ahead 1-0 over the Lady Saints before Raeana Ortiz tied the score up at 1-1 with a single on a bunt to drive in Samantha Gomez. Costly drops by Seward County in the top of the third caused them to fall behind by three as the Lady Saints struggled on the defensive side of the ball. Their offense however was able to connect on hits in timely fashion as Aaliyah Gutierrez stole home on a wild pitch while Anberlin O'Dell hit an RBI single to right field to close the gap to one at 4-3. The Beavers added another run to their total in the following inning to grow their lead back to two, but a monster three-run homer from Ortiz gave the Lady Saints a one score lead 6-5 heading into the sixth. Pratt locked things up at 6-6 heading into the seventh inning where Kamryn Martinez helped hold the Beavers at bay with a strikeout to send them back to the dugout while an RBI single from Gomez helped drive in Alyssa Morgan to finish off game one with a 7-6 win.
After leading the Seward County Lady Saints softball team to a perfect 6-0 week in Jayhawk Conference action, Alyssa Morgan was named the KJCCC Player of the Week for the first time in her SCCC career as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Morgan was a consistent force for the Lady Saints over the past week as she helped lead Seward County to a perfect 6-0 week where the freshman short stop went 12/20 at the plate while scoring 11 runs and recording 11 RBIs, 2 2Bs, 1 3B, and 2 HRs. She scored 3 runs in each of the Lady Saints run rule wins over the NW Kansas Tech Mavs and hit two home run bombs in game two against Garden City to help SCCC climb up the KJCCC standings. On the defensive side Morgan was able to record 2 POs and 19 assists over the six-game stretch as Seward County grabbed three doubleheader sweeps while run ruling their opponents in their final three games of the week.
On the season Morgan is hitting .403 with 46 RBIs, 11 2Bs, 3 3Bs, and 11 HR in 36 games for the Lady Saints.
Seward County will be back in action tomorrow as they continue KJCCC action against the Pratt Beavers at home on French Family Field as the Lady Saints look to stretch their win streak out to eight.
