‘Twisters’ makes for a fun summer blockbuster

Like many people, I was tuned into Twitter on Super Bowl Sunday to keep up with the game and during that time, there were many movie teasers and trailers also shared, with some that REALLY excited me, and some that ... didn’t.

One of the trailers that got shared was the trailer for “Twisters,” a sequel to the 1996 movie “Twister.” I freely admit one of the first thoughts I had after seeing/hearing there would be a sequel was “Okay, the first movie was cool, but were there really THAT many people clamoring for a sequel? And almost 30 years later?” Well, last Friday, I ended up taking myself to the movies to see just what the fuss would be about, and I ended up being rather pleasantly surprised.

Forrest McCurren to bring show to library July 24

Liberal Memorial Library has seen its share of entertainment throughout the summer thanks to its summer reading program, and the entertainment will soon continue.

Musical artist Forrest McCurren will be performing a concert at Liberal Memorial Library Wednesday, July 24, with the show starting at 6 p.m. As McCurren tells it, music has been a big part of his life for many years.

Darci Lynne to bring show to Beaver, Okla.

Darci Lynne Farmer has been on some big stages throughout the country, including winning season 12 of the hit TV competition “America’s Got Talent,” and soon, she will be bringing her show to a stage much closer to the area.

Farmer will be bringing her 'My Lips Are Sealed (Except When They're Not)' show to the Beaver County Fairgrounds in Beaver, Okla. Saturday, Aug. 24, with the show starting at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $25 ahead of time and $30 at the door, and tickets for children 12 years old and younger are $10 ahead of time and $15 at the door.

‘A Quiet Place’ fans finally get to see the beginning with ‘Day One’ prequel

Back in 2018, horror fans were introduced to the first installment of the “A Quiet Place” franchise, which was followed up by a sequel in 2021. In those movies, audiences were already entrenched in humanity’s survival against a particularly vicious alien monster species that is attracted to its prey through sound, and I ended up being a big can of both films, despite not being what one would call a horror aficionado.

This past weekend, “A Quiet Place” fans finally got the chance to see what happened on day one of the aliens’ invasion with “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which I had the chance to see. The prequel follows terminal cancer patient Samira (Lupita Nyong'o) as she navigates the beginning stages of the invasion in New York City and is later joined by fellow survivor Eric (Joseph Quinn). The first day of the invasion is only briefly shown in the first few minutes of “A Quiet Place, Part 2,” and I was very interested to see the invasion from the perspective of another affected city.

Thad Beach coming to library July 9

Liberal Memorial Library’s summer reading program activities will be wrapping up in the next couple weeks, and one of the last activities will be musical and fun.

Musician Thad Beach will be bringing his show to Liberal Memorial Library Tuesday, July 9, with the show starting at 1 p.m. As Beach tells it, he has been involved in music for a long time.
