Cimarron National Grassland preparing for open house and windmill rededication festivities

ELKHART – In celebration of National Grasslands Week, the Cimarron National Grassland invites the public to an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 20 at the district office.

This event will be at 242 Hwy 56 East in Elkhart. Community members will have an opportunity to meet District Ranger Nancy Brewer and the staff and to learn about current projects and initiatives on the Cimarron.

Decommissioned flags to get new purpose

Pastor Chuck Scroggs with Central Christian Church is ready to receive U.S. flags ready for replacement.

Scroggs received more than 150 flags last year that were “decommissioned,” and the ones with good-looking banners were repurposed into shadowboxes to honor living veterans.

Scroggs’ project is called “Let Me Fly Again” after an idea that came to him several years ago after a couple observations. Veterans never receive their flag, it is always given to surviving family members. Also, as he has been helping folks properly dispose of their tattered flags for many years, he came across several flags that had minimal damage, which he cleaned and ironed and put together for a shadowbox for veterans.

If you have an old flag, you can drop it off at Central Christian Church at 500 N. Lincoln Ave., or call Scroggs at (620) 391-7289 for pick-up.

SCCC to host fundraiser at Bee Jay game June 19

Seward County Community College

Seward County Community College will host a benefit cookout for Jacob Still’s family Wednesday, June 19 at Brent Gould Field when the Liberal Bee Jays host Colorado Springs.

SCCC will be cooking and serving hamburgers and hotdogs before the game beginning at 6 p.m. Fans can contribute through a free-will donation. There will also be a raffle for a meat bundle. All proceeds will go to Still’s family.

Still, a Seward County Community College employee, passed away after suffering injuries in an accident May 28.

SCCC would like to thank the Liberal Bee Jays for their participation in the event.

SWMC Foundation makes $315,000 donation to SWMC

Southwest Medical Center (SWMC) administrators and Southwest Medical Center Foundation members gathered Tuesday, May 21 for a significant check presentation at the medical center.

The SWMC Foundation has generously donated $315,000 this year to support capital improvement projects throughout Southwest Medical Center’s facilities.
