Ronald Gary Warden, known as Gary to all who knew and loved him, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 15, 2026 at the age of 89.

Born July 11, 1936 in Liberal to Harold and Blanche (Morris) Warden, Gary graduated from Liberal High School before continuing his education at Panhandle State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in horticulture and agronomy.

Gary married Karen Kilgore Dec. 28, 1988 and together, they raised eight children.

A proud and active member of the Seward County community, Gary held many leadership roles throughout his life. He served as a County Commissioner and contributed to local organizations such as the CMS Electric Board and Golden Plains Credit Union. A dedicated public servant, Gary made an impact that will not be forgotten.

Gary was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, who carried his commitment to service into many areas of his life. As a lifelong farmer, he was deeply involved in American Agriculture and the Kansas Pork Producers, participating in the historic tractorcade to Washington, D.C. as part of the American Agriculture Movement. He also served on the Five State Fair Board and remained actively engaged with 4-H programs and livestock shows, encouraging the next generation of young people in the community.

A devoted Christian, Gary was an active member of First Southern Baptist Church, where he loved singing in the choir and sharing his faith. He was involved in numerous ministries, including providing support at Good Samaritan Center and other nursing homes. His contributions extended to teaching Bible studies, leading Sunday School classes, and volunteering for Vacation Bible School. His unwavering faith was a guiding force in his life, and he cherished his time with the Senior Sunday School class at FSBC.

Gary’s love of sports was evident throughout his life. He refereed football for 45 years, as well as officiating basketball games. He was also a longtime scorekeeper for the Seward County Saints Basketball team and a devoted member of the local Baseball Association. His support of his children, grandchildren, and many others extended to their athletic pursuits, and his presence was a familiar and supportive one at countless sporting events.

Above all, Gary was a man who truly cherished people. He loved conversing with others, always eager to listen to their stories while sharing his own. His warmth, humor, and kindness touched many lives, and he leaves behind a legacy of inspiration and love.

Gary is survived by his wife, Karen; his children: Sheryl Warden (Walter), Angela Labrier (Eddie), Ron Warden (April), Brandee Cochran (Leonard), Lynette Reth, Brenda Butler, and Kelly Scruggs (Debbie); his sister, Wanda Feerer; He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored. Grandchildren are Heather Velasquez, Justin Labrier (Shelly), Rayce Warden (Katie), Megan Besecker, Aubrey Lundblade (Tyson), Charlee Cochran, Logan Scruggs, Riley Smith (Cole), Levi Scruggs, Damion Reth (Sharr), Dustin Bozarth, Christina Scruggs, Candace Scruggs (Marquis, Sr.), Brandon Moody (Cassie), and Shaylee May (Justin). Great-grandchildren are Madelyn, Quinn, and Lincoln Labrier, Evelyn Warden, Colton and Bodhi Lundblade, Leilani Scruggs, Brynlee Smith, Braxton, Kingstin, and Axl Bozarth, Alistair Scruggs, Isabella and Marquis Jr., Deagan and Callie Moody, Zack, Zane, and Ellie May.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jay Ingland; his brother-in-law, Jim Feerer; his son, Rodney Scruggs; his nephews, Randy and Jay Ingland; niece, Debra Feerer; and nephew-in-law, Rick Sturgeon.

• In accordance with his wishes, Gary has been cremated.

A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 6, 2026 at First Southern Baptist Church at 621 N. Western Avenue in Liberal.

A private family graveside service will follow at Restlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to Hope for Heroes or First Southern Baptist Church in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67901.
