No. 2 doubles shine in Topeka

The Liberal tennis team went to Topeka Monday to seek out some quality competition from the eastern side of the state and found it.

“We fought hard all around and gave some good teams all they could take while getting some quality victories along the way as well,” Liberal coach David Short said.

Competing teams were, Liberal, Bonner Springs, Topeka High, Topeka West, Wichita East, Wichita Southeast, Manhattan, Gardner-Edgerton, Derby and Junction City. Team standings have not yet been sent individual results were:

No. 1 singles: Gerardo Holguin drew the tough singles assignment and played the best each school had to offer. He finished 1-4 but fought hard all day long.

“Gerardo is still new to the game but is developing well. He should be a force next season,” Short said.

Lily Guy scored a hat trick to lead the Lady Redskins to a 9-0 mercy rule win over Alva, Oka., Tuesday at Redskin Field.

Ashley Batista scored twice including the final goal with four seconds remaining in the first half.

Single goals were scored by Evelin Tarango, Yvanna Rivera, Ana Vela, Denisse Garcia and Yuly Molina. Liberal moved to 5-4-1 on the season.

After dropping the opening game to Great Bend 4-2, the Liberal Redskins ended the day with an 11-6 win Tuesday in a double header split.

Liberal had two golden opportunities late against Great Bend in Game 1, but left the bases loaded in the fifth and seventh innings in a 4-2 loss. Kye Morris had three of Liberal’s five hits.

In Game 2, the Redskins jumped out early and scored five runs in the first and five more in the second to take a 10-0 lead.

Liberal added another run in the third before the Panthers rallied late to score six runs, including four in the seventh before Blayden Betts recorded the final out.

Kappelmann led Liberal with three hits, and Austin Dodge had two.

Liberal swimmers take 5th at Hays meet, show depth and relay strength

The Liberal High School girls swim team delivered a strong performance Tuesday at the Hays Invitational, finishing fifth overall out of seven with 104 points while showcasing both depth and continued improvement across the lineup.

The Lady Redskins were led by a standout effort in the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the team of Alexis Ugalde, Lyla Anderson, Nathalie Ortega, and Jyzelle Juarez placed fourth with a time of 5:04.13, marking Liberal’s top finish of the meet.

Liberal also opened the meet with a solid relay showing in the 200-yard medley relay, as Nathalie Ortega, Jordyn Myers, Jyzelle Juarez, and Alexis Ugalde combined for a 7th-place finish in 2:30.02.

Redskin tennis mixes up line-up at Garden City

Liberal took all varsity and junior varsity players to Garden City Saturday.

“This gave all of our guys some varsity level competition,” Liberal coach David Short said. “I mixed up our singles to try different things. It didn’t quite give us the outcome we were wanted. All boys competed hard.”

Singles and doubles had 24 entries and all No. 1s and No. 2s were combined. One of the Liberal teams took fifth and the other took ninth.
