Marc Svaty's debut as the head coach of the Liberal Redskin football program started with a bolt of lightning, but he was still pleased with the outcome — a 7-0 win over Wichita Southeast.

Lightning led to a delay with about one minute remaining in the first quarter, and four hours later the game resumed until halftime. But during the 10-minute intermission lightning returned, and the game was called.

Liberal's best drive of the first quarter was the first drive of the game. The Redskins started at their own 35 yard line and showcased a no-huddle style of offense that relied heavily on the run until Bren Kappelmann completed a six-yard pass to Isaac Castaneda for six yards on a fourth-and-two.

Special to the Leader & Times Hugoton — The Liberal High School Girls Golf Team got their 2026 season started at the Hugoton Invitational Thursday at Forewinds Golf Course. Due to the expected heat, the tournament tee-time was moved up to 10 a.m. and was reduced to just nine holes. Junior Scarlett Carr, coming off an appearance at the KSHSAA 6A State Tournament last year, led the way for the Lady Red with a score of 50 for ninth place individually. Sophomores Aniya Stegman and Janelle Aquino, along with Freshman Ella Carr, all posted scores of 56 for a tie for 21st, only five strokes from 10th place. Janelle Aquino and Ella Carr were playing in their first-ever tournament. Senior Rylie Fries posted a 61 and Junior Valeria Gandara Vega recorded a 69. Liberal started strong, having three players in the top 10 after three holes, but they faltered late in the round. TRINIDAD, Colo. – The Seward County women's soccer team rolled to an 8-0 victory over Trinidad State on Wednesday evening at Central Park. The Lady Saints (2-1) secured their second win in quick succession, ending the match early at the 70-minute mark under the eight-goal mercy rule after taking an 8-0 lead in the 68th minute. Seward wasted little time taking control, scoring seven goals in the opening half. Juliana Salazar paced the attack with a hat trick, while Olja Trivunovic, Luz Felix, Lise Bour, Caroline Benck and Ana Tapuskovic each added a goal. All of Seward's goal scorers except Salazar recorded their first collegiate goals. Christie Kannengiesser played the full match in goal and earned the clean sheet as the Lady Saints kept Trinidad State off the scoreboard. Seward County returned home at 9 a.m. Saturday to host Metropolitan Community College at Redskin Field. The Saints (3-1) carried a 1-0 lead into halftime before adding three more goals after the break to hand the Trojans (0-4) their fourth loss of the season. Joao Dornas opened the scoring in the 30th minute, netting his first collegiate goal off an assist from Enrique Vasquez to give Seward County an early advantage. The Saints took control in the second half behind Tobias Huggins, who scored the first two goals of his collegiate career in a seven-minute span. Huggins found the back of the net in the 53rd and 60th minutes, with Samuel Jimenez assisting on both scores. Jimenez now has four assists this season. Joseph Franklin extended the lead to 4-0 in the 72nd minute, scoring for the third consecutive match. Alessandro Gotelli was credited with the assist on Franklin's third goal of the season. Trinidad State avoided the shutout with its lone goal in the 76th minute. Seward County's defense limited the Trojans' opportunities throughout the match. Nicolas Fonseca played the first half in goal and did not face a shot on target, while Jonathan Wallace handled the second-half duties and made one save. The Saints finished with an 11-7 advantage in shots and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Seward County returnedhome at 11 a.m. Saturday to host Metropolitan Community College at Redskin Field.

TYRONE, Okla.—It looked like the Tyrone Bobcats were headed to a romp over their rival, the Turpin Cardinals, when they scored touchdowns on their first two drives to take a 12-0 lead less than halfway through the first quarter. But the Cardinals came alive, scoring 54 unanswered points to claim the 54-12 victory over the Bobcats.

Turpin outgained Tyrone 308 to 227, with each team collecting ten first downs. The Cardinals were 6 of 7 on 2-point conversions while the Bobcats were 0-2, Each team tallied 85 yards in penalties, the Cardinals on nine flags, the Bobcats on 12.
