Defense dominates in 18-6 win

With six starters sidelined for Friday’s game against Wichita South, the Liberal Redskins had to look to other players to step in, and while the offense may have been slowed, the defense continued to dominate in an 18-6 Liberal win.

The Double X backfield of Xavier Porras and Xavier Tafoya did what was needed to secure the win.

Porras carried most of the load for the Redskins, rushing the ball 27 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

No. 3 Liberal dominates Hesston to move to 5-0

One of the top players in Kansas, Suain Moncayo, was not able to play with the No. 3 (MaxPreps) Liberal Redskins Thursday, but it didn’t seem to matter. The Redskins overcame a slow start and ran away with a 9-1 win to move to 5-0 in the final tune-up game before No. 4 (MaxPreps) and nationally ranked No. 9 Dodge City comes to Redskin Field Tuesday.

The Redskins trailed for the first time all season when Hesston scored a goal six minutes into the game. Five minutes later, Alan Baeza tied the score off an assist from Diego Pavia. Liberal took the lead 16:38 into the game when Johnny Young passed the ball to Jaden Gonzalez who kicked it in for the 2-1 advantage.

Saints soccer tops Wesleyan to move to 2-1-3

Seward County men’s soccer continued their 2024 season Wednesday with a four-hour trip to Salina, where they faced NAIA opponent Kansas Wesleyan.

The Saints scored early to take a lead that only grew, with Seward County grabbing a 3-0 win over the Coyotes.

Javier Ruchelli Alvarez got the scoring started seven minutes into the first half, with Leonardo Leitao feeding him a pinpoint pass that Ruchelli cashed in for a goal to give the Saints a 1-0 lead over Kansas Wesleyan.

Lady Saints sweep Butler to move to 2-1 in conference play

Seward County caught fire early on Tuesday and never looked back as they steamrolled past the Butler Grizzlies in a ferocious 3-0 sweep to win their second straight conference game and improve their spot in the Jayhawk standings.

The Lady Saints opened the match with a barrage of kills against the opposing Grizzlies, with Marcelina Pyka helping to put Seward in front midway through the first with a kill down the middle for a 12-11 lead. Mariana Silva Rose up high for another Lady Saints kill to propel Seward County ahead by four to keep the momentum rolling with a 19-15 lead.

Redskins crush Red Hawks 70-6

By the time Liberal had its third snap form scrimmage, the Redskins already had a 13-0 lead to start a 70-6 romp over Wichita North in the season opener.

Xavier Porras gave the Redskins the early 7-0 lead when he broke free on the second play from scrimmage on a 59-yard run.

Landon Martinez turned defense into offense three plays later when he intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead.

Freshman quarterback Tevin Cotter ran his third play form scrimmage and threw his first pass of his career — a 52-yard touchdown to Anthony Aragonez, and the Redskins had a 21-0 lead with 6:22 to play in the first quarter.
