The Seward County Community College women's basketball team surged in the fourth quarter and got back on the winning track with a 59-53 victory over the Barton Community College Lady Cougars on Wednesday at the Greenhouse.

The Lady Saints, who remained unbeaten at home with a 6-0 mark, improved to 4-2 in the Jayhawk Conference and 9-3 overall. Seward finishes its first half schedule with a game against Fort Hays Tech Northwest at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Greenhouse.

The Seward County Community College men's basketball team played hard, but fell to the No. 18 Barton Community College Cougars, 80-70, on Wednesday at the Greenhouse.

The Saints fell to 1-5 in the Jayhawk Conference and 2-9 overall. Seward caps its first-half schedule with a game against Fort Hays Tech Northwest at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Greenhouse.

Liberal coach Brandi Fowler assessed the performance of Hays against the Lady Redskins in one sentence.

“Hays simply outplayed us tonight,” she said.

That was her reaction to a tough 77-50 loss for the Lady Redskins in the Western Athletic Conference opener Tuesday in The Big House.

The Lady Redskins haven’t suffered a 27-point loss in several years. But a tenacious Lady Indian defense forced Liberal into multiple turnovers early, and by the time the Lady Redskins recovered they were already staring down a double-digit deficit.

Hays jumped out to a 7-0 start against the Liberal Redskins, and Liberal never recovered in a 70-34 loss Tuesday in The Big House.

Freshman Eathan Hernandez was the first to score for the Redskins, and Xavier Tafoya had a strong move to the basket to cut the lead to 7-4, but turnover after turnover led to fast breaks for the Indians, and by the end of the first quarter Liberal trailed 19-8.

Hays continued to add to the lead and jumped ahead 29-12 with five minutes remaining in the first half.
