Big first half carries Cardinals to victory

TURPIN, Okla.— The Turpin Cardinals forced 19 turnovers and held the Goodwell Eagles without a field goal for almost eight minutes in the first half on their way to a 72-45 win.

Turpin took an early 11-2 lead capped by a Jhett Huffman three with 4:31 left in the first quarter and led 17-9 with 20 seconds left in the first. The Cardinals then went on a 23-2 run with the Eagles only points coming at the line. Goodwell finally hit their first field goal of the quarter with 36 seconds left in the half. Turpin led 40-13 at the break.

LHS wrestlers compete in home dual against Great Bend

The Lady Redskins trailed Great Bend by five team points heading in to the final two matches of the dual before Hayleen Martinez scored a come-from-behind win, and Aileen Figueroa finished the night with a pin to secure a 43-36 Senior Night victory for the Lady Redskins.

The Redskins continued to develop younger wrestlers in a 55-24 loss.

Kiersie Carlile started the Lady Redskins with a 12-0 victory over her opponent, but Great Bend earned several victories to take a 24-10 lead.

But the Lady Redskins battled back to cut the lead to 36-31 heading in to the final two matches.

Lady Redskins finish strong in victory over Hooker, 54-47

Liberal and Hooker, Okla., have played memorable games in the last several years, and Tuesday night’s match-up was another back-and-forth battle to the newfound rivalry. The Lady Redskins came away with the victory after a strong fourth quarter led to a 54-47 win.

The two battled early with the Lady Bulldogs taking a 10-9 lead after the first quarter.

The defensive struggle continued in the second quarter, and the two teams headed to halftime in a 22-22 draw.

Redskins can’t keep pace with Bulldogs

Liberal’s young squad put together a competitive first quarter against Hooker, Okla., Tuesday in The Big House, but once the Bulldogs hit their stride, Liberal started to fade and fell to 4-11 on the season after a 65-32 loss.

The Redskins took an early 6-2 lead with two shots from Adrian Moreno-Gonzalez and a basket from James Fieser.

Fieser added another basket with 3:20 to play in the first that gave the Redskins a 12-8 lead.

Liberal Wrestling Club competes in recent tournaments

The Liberal Wrestling Club hosted their home tournament, Battle in the West, Saturday. There were wrestlers that came in from four different states - Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado. The club is hoping to reach out to make next year’s event a five state showdown to include New Mexico.

LWC had many young wrestlers that wrestle for their club compete at this tournament.

“It is always a hectic but rewarding day. It is great to bring in hundreds of wrestlers and their families for the day. It is a big thing to put together but thanks to our parents, wrestlers, coaches, sponsors and volunteers, it was a huge success,” Tournament Director Krista Holcomb said.
