Kappelmann pitches first three innings of the season, Saints split with Lamar

The Seward Saints opened the 2025 season with a doubleheader split against Lamar Community College, drooping the opener, 6-3, but winning the second game, 5-1, Saturday at Brent Gould Field.

Seward is 1-1 and hosts Kirkwood Community College (Iowa) from a four-game set on Saturday and Sunday at Brent Gould Field.

Liberal native Brooks “Kap” Kappelmann got the start Saturday and started strong by striking out the side in the first inning and leaving the mound with a 2-1 lead after three innings.

Lady Redskins top Woodward, boys fall

The Lady Redskins were able to avenge earlier season losses to Woodward,Okla., Friday in The Big House while the Redskins continued to develop younger players in a loss to the Boomers.

Two of the five losses for the Lady Redskins came at the hand of Woodward, a one point loss Dec. 14, and a 68-58 loss Jan. 7, both in Woodward.

Liberal hosted Woodward Friday and came away with a 65-55 win.

The Lady Redskins took an early 4-0 lead, but the Lady Boomers battled back to a 5-5 tie.

Lady Saints win, Saints lose at Pratt

The Seward Lady Saints needed to get a win and did just that with an 86-45 rout of Pratt Community College Saturday on the road.

The Lady Saints improved to 9-7 in the Jayhawk Conference and 14-8 overall. Seward will host Dodge City at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Greenhouse. The Gameday Sponsor is Equity Bank.

LHS wrestlers win home dual over Lamar, Colo.

The Lady Redskins took to the mat Tuesday in The Big House and came away with a 44-29 win over Lamar, Colo,

Keirsie Carlile got the Lady Redskins off to a good start, and Liberal took advantage of several open weights and then earned wins at the upper weight classes to secure the win.

The Redskins also came away with a dual win over the Thunder after scoring a big come-from behind win in the 126 pound weight division when Aaron Muñoz was down 14-0 and was able to reverse his opponents and get a pin late in the match.

Lady Saints fall to Butler, 61-53

The Seward Lady Saints fell to Butler in a 61-53 road loss Wednesday.

The Lady Saints dropped to 8-7 in the Jayhawk Conference and 13-8 overall. SCCC continues its road trip with a game at Pratt on Saturday at 2 p.m.

It was a close contest with both teams battling with the outcome in doubt until the final minutes. The Grizzlies had strong first and third quarters, leading 19-15 after one, holding a 33-30 margin at the half and building a 48-40 advantage through three quarters.
