The Redskin offense struggled to move the ball early in the Class 5A first round playoff game against Topeka Seaman Friday, but when they adjusted at halftime, they became unstoppable in a 41-17 win.
Topeka Seaman built an early 14-3 lead before the Redskins scored a touchdown with 27 seconds remaining in the first half when quarterback Tevin Cotter scored on a five-yard run to cut the lead to 14-10.
Liberal entered Tuesday’s Class 6A first round playoff game as the No. 5 seed, but that didn’t matter to the No. 12 Lawrence Free State Firebirds, and the game came down to penalty kicks after two scoreless overtimes before the Redskins were able to secure a win.
The Firebirds had a strong wind advantage in the first half and controlled the ball most of the half.
Midway through the first half the Redskins were called for a penalty in the box, and the Firebirds converted on the shot to take a 1-0 lead.
Liberal goalie Diego Flores had to fend off multiple Firebird attacks in the face of a stiff wind the rest of the first half, but the Redskin offense couldn’t overcome the Firebird defense and a stiff wind in their face and couldn’t tie the game before half.
James Fieser scored three touchdowns and had 173 yards receiving, but the Angry Red defense couldn’t slow down the Hays running game in a 49-28 loss.
Liberal allowed Hays to get off to a 28-0 start midway through the second quarter before getting the offense on track despite injuries that decimated the running backs.
The Redskins put together a five-minute, 15-play drive that covered 20 yards and ended with a four-yard pass from Tevin Cotter to Fieser to cut the lead to 28-6.
The Redskins mishandled a snap on a punt attempt with a wet ball on a foggy night at Redskin Field in the third quarter, and Hays took advantage of the short field to take a 35-6 lead. But the Redskins responded with another sustained drive that took seven minutes and 17 plays to move the ball 70 yards and ended with a six-yard pass to Fieser for a touchdown to cut the lead to 35-12.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The NJCAA announced Friday that former Seward County Lady Saints volleyball head coach Thais Baziquetto-Allen will be inducted into the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class.
Baziquetto-Allen will be formally inducted into the NJCAA Volleyball Hall of Fame Nov. 18 in Clarksville, Tenn., at the NJCAA National Tournament Banquet.
Baziquetto-Allen spent three seasons leading the Seward volleyball program, from 2015-2017. She finished with an 86-28 overall record and was named the KJCCC Coach of the Year in 2017 as well as the Co-Coach of the Year in 2016.
TURPIN, Okla.—Friday night was a tale of contrasting styles as the quick and shifty Turpin Cardinals took on the big and lumbering Garber Wolverines. The Cardinals speed and big plays prevailed, 28-16.
The Cardinal offense racked up 324 yards of offense on just 32 plays to average over 10 yards per play. Big plays played a huge part in that with Turpin only tallying 11 first downs. The defense stood strong against a Garber team that was bigger at virtually every position, holding them to 206 yards and 15 first downs.
