Dodge City hosted the Sunflower Showdown on October 17th and 18th that brought both Liberal and Dodge some new schools they don’t normally get to play in Kapaun Mt Carmel and Olathe North.

Liberal faced Kapaun on Friday to kick off the event. Kapaun got on the scoreboard quickly at the 4:46 mark with a free kick that found the back of the net from 35 yards out that was placed perfectly at the top of the goal to make the score 1-0.

Seymour Rogers has not swept their crosstown opponents in football in 10 years, but Thursday the Apaches were able to claim a pair of victories over the Eisenhower Warriors in the annual rivalry.

The seventh grade game was dominated by Apache Carl Dean, but not before the Warriors had a strong start.

The Apaches received the opening kickoff but faced a stiff wind and was called for a pair of penalties that stalled their first drive.

A short punt landed in the hands of a Warrior near the line of scrimmage who sprinted to the right side and returned the kick to the end zone for a touchdown and an early 8-0 lead.

Johnny Young stunned Hays with an early goal, and Ariel Gayton added another first-half goal to lead the Redskins to a 2-1 win over Hays Tuesday at Redskin Field.

The Redskins had several first-half attacks that ended near the Indian goal, but only two shots found their way to the net.

The Redskins couldn’t land a goal in the second half, and the Indians were able to get a shot to the net to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Redskin defense protected the goal the rest of the way to secure the Western Athletic Conference win.

The Redskins will travel to Dodge City Friday to participate in the Sunflower Showdown. Liberal will face Kapaun Friday and Olathe North Saturday.

Five Lady Redskin seniors played their last game in The Big House Tuesday in a three-set loss to Garden City.

The Lady Redskins were attempting to get their first Western Athletic Conference win of the season and competed in the first two sets.

The Lady Redskins took an early lead in Set 1, but the Lady Buffaloes rallied to take a lead and hold on for a 25-18 win.

The Lady Redskins were competitive in Set 2 as well but faltered late in a 25-19 loss.

The Lady Redskins trailed early in Set 3 and never recovered in a 25-13 loss.

Liberal fell to 5-24 on the season and will compete in the WAC tournament Saturday.
