Liberal only needed about 20 seconds to score its first goal, and the scores kept coming in a 9-0 win over Alva, Okla., Tuesday at Redskin Field.

The Lady Redskins put in two goals in the first three minutes of the game, but the Lady Goldbugs were able to fend off attack after attack by the Lady Redskins for the next 20 minutes.

After multiple missed opportunities, the Lady Redskins finally broke through with their third goal of the first half and then pounded in two more by halftime to take a 5-0 lead.

The Liberal Redskins went 2-1 at the Guthrie 89er Tournament that ended Saturday.

After knocking off the host team Thursday, Liberal advanced to the semi-finals against the Harrah Panthers and came away with a dominating 13-1 win.

But Liberal didn’t walk away with the win early. The Redskins scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth, and Marco Alonso tossed a shutout bottom half of the sixth to secure the win.

Women’s sports have taken a larger share of the spotlight in recent years, and while most of the attention has been on the athletes, other changes are taking place that has seen a greater interest from women.

Officiating has long been dominated by men, with the occasional woman on a crew.

But having an all-woman crew for varsity-level sports has been rare.

Zoey Torres had a strong day at the plate for the Lady Redskin softball team, but without additional support the Lady Redskins were not able to earn a Western Athletic Conference win against Garden City Thursday and dropped a pair to the Lady Buffaloes.

Liberal was competitive in Game 1 but fell short 7-3.

Torres had a two-for-three performance at the plate.

Madalynn McCarter had Liberal’s only other hit in the loss.
