The Liberal Redskins dominated the first round playoff game against Haysville Campus Tuesday in a 7-0 victory despite having a starter on the bench.
The Redskins faced a stiff wind in the first half with gusts reported as high as 50 miles per hour. But that didn’t keep the Redskins from maintaining control of the ball for much of the first half near the Colt box.
HAYS — With three minutes to play and Hays trying to run out the clock with a 19-14 lead, Liberal’s chances of a victory were fading. But that changed when the Angry Red defense forced Hays to attempt a third down pass, but before the Hays quarterback could find a receiver, a blitzing Landon Martinez knocked the ball out of the quarterback’s hands backward, and Martinez headed to the dribbling ball, scooped it up in stride and headed to the end zone to give the Redskins a 20-19 lead.
The Turpin Cardinals have played the toughest schedule possible over the past two weeks taking on the number 1 and number 2 ranked teams in the state. And after a close loss to Laverne last week, the Cardinals answered big with a 44-22 over the Garber Wolverines.
Things didn’t start out so well for the Cardinals with Garber getting on the board on their opening drive with a 52-yard touchdown run to go up 8-0. But Turpin answered back with a touchdown drive of their own capped by a 7-yard run by Carson Peters to tie the game at 8-8.
After an impressive 6-0 win over Great Bend Tuesday, the Redskins traveled to Dodge City to face the undefeated Red demons, and after taking an early 1-0 lead off a Suain Moncayo goal, the offense couldn’t get another ball in the net and fell 4-1.
Dodge City ties the game midway through the first half and took a 2-1 lead at the break.
Dodge City added two more goals in the final five minutes after a penalty kick allowed the Red Demons to take a 3-1 lead and a final goal pushed the score to 4-1.
It's the final week of the 2024 regular season and the Seward County Saints play host in their final two games beginning with a matchup against the Coffeyville Red Ravens who came into Liberal and suffered the same result as the last time these two teams competed with Seward County taking the win to secure a winning season in just the second year of the program.
