Hutchinson — Two Liberal High School Golfers traveled to Hutchinson Thursday to participate in the Hutchinson High Invitational. This was, by far, the largest tournament the Lady Redskins will play in this year with 22 teams and 114 golfers.

Manhattan won the tournament with a team score of 297 with Maize (331) finishing second. The rest of the top five schools were McPherson (349), Andover (350)  and Garden City (354). Hays finished 12th with a 397 and Dodge City finished 18th with a 460.

After giving up two late scores to Dodge City a week earlier, the Liberal Redskins reversed the script and put Friday night’s game away against Garden City by scoring 16 points late for a 23-6 win.

The Angry Red defense set the tone early with a three-and-out on Garden City’s first possession.

The Redskins took an early 7-0 lead by scoring on their first offensive drive of the game. Xavier Tafoya capped a 62-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 advantage.

Despite spending most of the game near the Hays goal, the Liberal Redskins couldn’t connect for a goal until the final six minutes of the game, and a dominating defense made it stick in a 1-0 Redskin win.

Liberal took several long shots in the first half, but most sailed above and around the goal.

The Hays goalkeeper made some saves as well, and by halftime the game was knotted at 0-0.

Eisenhower fell behind in the first 15 seconds of the game Thursday and couldn’t sustain drives in a 38-6 loss to Horace Good.

The Warriors were able to move the ball on the ground and through the air with key third down conversion passes and scrambles by quarterback Christian Moreno.

But turnovers and tackles in the backfield ended drives while the Hawks were able to break big plays.

The Hawks built a 32-0 halftime lead, and the two teams traded touchdowns in the second half for the 38-6 final.

Eisenhower travels to Hays next Thursday.
