The No. 5 Lady Redskins opened the season with an impressive 24-6 win over Hugoton Tuesday in The Big House while the Redskins came up short, 49-29.
“We competed pretty well,” Liberal coach Mike Fowler said. “Hugoton is a very good team. I wanted to compete and I felt like we did a good job of that.”
The girls showcased more technique than previous years.
There was no Thanksgiving hangover for the Seward County Community College women's basketball team. After an epic come-from-behind victory against No. 23 Butler Tuesday, followed by Thanksgiving break, the Lady Saints showed no sign of a letdown with an 82-57 win over the Pratt Beavers Saturday at the Greenhouse.
The Seward County Community College men's basketball team came close once again only to fall short – again. The Saints lost to the Pratt Beavers, 74-71, in overtime on Saturday at the Greenhouse.
Seward remained winless in the Jayhawk Conference at 0-4 and 1-8 overall.
From one of the worst halfs to one of the best, the Lady Saints erased a poor performance with a 30-point fourth quarter to overcome a 19-point deficit in the Greenhouse Tuesday for a 63-56 win over the No. 23 Butler Lady Grizzlies.
Ari Gordon was key to the rally, dropping a career-high 27 points.
The Seward County Saints were competitive, holding leads in the first and second halves, but could not get over the hump and lost to No. 11 Butler Community College, 80-74, Tuesday at the Greenhouse.
The Saints remained winless in the Jayhawk conference at 0-3 and 1-7 overall.
