The Seward County Lady Saints fell short in its battle with Coffeyville, losing 75-63 Saturday at the Greenhouse.
The Lady Saints dropped to 6-4 in the Jayhawk Conference and 11-5 overall. The loss was also Seward's first home loss of the season, falling to 8-1 at the Greenhouse. Seward hits the road for its next game, playing at Hutchinson at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
In the Dodge City Girls Invitational, Liberal High School secured a total of 148 points, finishing second overall behind Dodge City (232.5). Notable performances include Hayleen Martinez and Aileen Figuroa who both claimed first place in their respective weight classes, scoring 26.0 and 20.0 points. Keirsie Carlile and Isabella Guttierez each earned runner-up finishes in their divisions, contributing 16.0 and 17.0 points, respectively. Other significant contributors were Genesis Orrantia and Evelyn Sandoval who placed fifth and fourth, scoring 14.5 and 13.0 points.
Varsity boys finished with 2401 total pinfall. Logan Apsley led the team with a 491 series.
Girls varsity — 1932 total pinfall. Earning 1 WAC point. Tabbi Strickland led the team and finished 2nd overall with a 420 series.
JV boys — 1888 total pinfall. Earning 2 WAC points. Zachary Mock finished with a 378 series.
JV girls — 1328 total pinfall. Shanna Starkey finished 3rd with a 310 series.
The team will compete today at Garden City.
In a game of runs, the Woodward, Okla., Lady Boomers were able to put together a final push that erased a Liberal lead and led to a 68-58 loss for the Lady Redskins.
Liberal opened with a quick 8-2 lead, but the Lady Boomers battled back and took a lead in the first quarter.
While Liberal saw some players return to the roster Tuesday in Woodward, Okla., the result for the past four games remained the same. Liberal dropped its fourth straight in a 69-47 loss to the Boomers.
Liberal struggled early with turnovers leading to baskets for Woodward., and the Redskins trailed 17-3 early.
The Redskins shaved the lead to 19-8 at the end of the first quarter, but by halftime Woodward stretched the lead to 38-18.
