Seward County started strong in the 2024-25 season after going 2-0 on the opening weekend that was followed up Tuesday afternoon with a dominant win over West Texas, with the Lady Saints taking down the Westerners 77-46 inside of the Green House for their home opener.
Seward opened the contest with guns blazing from long-range. Maddie Kincaide, Kylee Hunt, and Avery Marchino all nailed in a triple to help push Seward ahead 13-0 and force an early timeout from the Westerners. It was raining inside the Green House for the Lady Saints with every shot seeming to go in with an off-balanced floater from Chloe Burnham finding its way in to make it a 23-5 lead before a pair at the stripe from Marchino helped end the first 10 minutes with Seward fully in control with a 25-8 lead.
Bishop Carroll and Liberal have a history of playing big-stakes games, ranging from the old district system to the Kansas Class 5A playoffs.
Rarely would the match-up be a first round game, but with Carroll having one of the most challenging seasons in recent memory and the Redskins on the rise, the old rivalry was renewed at Redskin Field Friday.
While Liberal dominated the rivalry through the 1980s and 1990s, Liberal has lost the last eight meetings to the private school before Friday’s 17-6 victory.
The Turpin Cardinals wasted no time putting away the Pioneer Mustangs, scoring six touchdowns in the first half on their way to a playoff-clinching 46-16 victory.
Carson Peters threw for 208 yards and 3 touchdowns on 10 for 14 passing and ran for another touchdown. Jhett Huffman gained 182 yards and scored 3 touchdowns on just 13 touches, and Riley Fowler led the defense with 20 tackles including 7 for a loss.
