The Eisenhower Warriors and Great Bend Panthers each scored three touchdowns Thursday at Warrior Field, but the Panthers were able to score one conversion while the Warriors didn’t, and that turned out to be the difference in a 20-18 Warrior loss.

The Panthers started the scoring to take an 8-0 lead, but the Warriors responded with a score but couldn’t get the point after and trailed 8-6.

Midway through the third quarter, Cristian Moreno broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run to give the Warriors a 12-8 lead. But the Panthers answered with a kickoff return for a touchdown on the very next play to regain the lead 14-12.

Addy Lopez led Liberal with a 114 and a fourth place finish in the Liberal Invitational Tournament Monday at Willow Tree Golf Course.

Scarlet Carr turned in a 129, Lindsay Morlan shot a 139, Aaliah Olsen was one stroke behind at 140, and Karmen Martinez shot a 161.

Lopez improved her best score by 13 strokes, Scarlett Carr trimmed six strokes off her best score, and Lindsey Morlan improved by nine strokes.

“This is exactly what I was hoping for going into this tournament,” Coach Bert Luallen said. “With such a young, inexperienced squad, I’m simply looking for improvement each time we go out. That’s what we are striving for.”

With six starters sidelined for Friday’s game against Wichita South, the Liberal Redskins had to look to other players to step in, and while the offense may have been slowed, the defense continued to dominate in an 18-6 Liberal win.

The Double X backfield of Xavier Porras and Xavier Tafoya did what was needed to secure the win.

Porras carried most of the load for the Redskins, rushing the ball 27 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

One of the top players in Kansas, Suain Moncayo, was not able to play with the No. 3 (MaxPreps) Liberal Redskins Thursday, but it didn’t seem to matter. The Redskins overcame a slow start and ran away with a 9-1 win to move to 5-0 in the final tune-up game before No. 4 (MaxPreps) and nationally ranked No. 9 Dodge City comes to Redskin Field Tuesday.

The Redskins trailed for the first time all season when Hesston scored a goal six minutes into the game. Five minutes later, Alan Baeza tied the score off an assist from Diego Pavia. Liberal took the lead 16:38 into the game when Johnny Young passed the ball to Jaden Gonzalez who kicked it in for the 2-1 advantage.
