The Lady Redskins softball team traveled to Garden City Tuesday and dropped a Western Athletic Conference game to the Lady Buffaloes 12-2.
Freshman Allie Champion started in the circle for the Lady Redskins and allowed eight runs, five of those earned, on five hits and four walks while striking out three. She also gave up a home run.
After starting the season with a record 13 straight games, the Liberal Redskins finally hit the road Saturday and traveled to the opposite corner of the state for a pair of games in Olathe.
But the team’s fortune did not improve with two losses.
Liberal struggled at the plate and on the field in an 11-0 loss to Olathe West.
The Lady Redskins only played seven innings of softball in Hugoton Thursday, but it was enough to gather two road wins.
The Lady Redskins started the day with a four-inning 21-2 win.
Zoey Torres started in the circle and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out five in three innings.
For some, getting 200 wins is a monumental moment, but for Liberal coach Eric Olmstead, he said it was more like a burden being lifted.
Olmstead began coaching the Redskins in 2007, and with no baseball games played in the COVID year of 2020, he has been at the helm for 18 seasons.
“You get a monkey off your back,” Olmstead said after the Redskins battled back for a come-form-behind win over Woodward, Okla., Thursday, 11-10.
“The kids knew about it, and they wanted to be a part of it,” Olmstead said. “My family supports me and let me do this for 18 years. That’s a lot of wins. But that’s a lot of losses, too.”
On a blustery day, the Liberal Lady Red soccer team battled the Great Bend Panthers and came out on top with a dominant 2-0 victory.
The scoring began in the 24th minute of the first half when Ana Vela delivered a precise pass to Lily Santiago who found the back of the net to give Liberal the early lead.
