The Lady Redskins couldn’t find the basket in the first half against Garden City Tuesday but rallied in the second half to escape with a 44-41 win over the Lady Buffaloes.
The Lady Redskins struggled to make shots in the first half, and while the defense continued to make shots difficult for Garden City, the lack of offense left Liberal trailing 17-11 at half.
The Lady Redskins continued to chase the Lady Buffaloes for most of the second half until the Lady Redskins had their first lead since the opening moments of the game.
The Seward County Saints suffered a heart-breaking loss on a last-second shot to No. 23 Coffeyville, 51-50, Saturday at the Greenhouse.
Seward led by as many as seven late in the second half, 49-42 with 1:40 remaining, but could not grab key rebounds at the end and Coffeyville scored the next seven points to knot the game at 49 with 20 seconds remaining.
The Seward County Lady Saints fell short in its battle with Coffeyville, losing 75-63 Saturday at the Greenhouse.
The Lady Saints dropped to 6-4 in the Jayhawk Conference and 11-5 overall. The loss was also Seward's first home loss of the season, falling to 8-1 at the Greenhouse. Seward hits the road for its next game, playing at Hutchinson at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
In the Dodge City Girls Invitational, Liberal High School secured a total of 148 points, finishing second overall behind Dodge City (232.5). Notable performances include Hayleen Martinez and Aileen Figuroa who both claimed first place in their respective weight classes, scoring 26.0 and 20.0 points. Keirsie Carlile and Isabella Guttierez each earned runner-up finishes in their divisions, contributing 16.0 and 17.0 points, respectively. Other significant contributors were Genesis Orrantia and Evelyn Sandoval who placed fifth and fourth, scoring 14.5 and 13.0 points.
