A rain-shortened game that ended in a loss Tuesday, coupled with a 9-7 loss Wednesday, opened the door for the Hays Larks to pass the Liberal Bee Jays in the final weekend of the Rocky Mountain League season.
Both Hays and Liberal have already received bids to the NBC World Series that starts next week, but the Bee Jays had control of their own destiny heading in to the pair of games with the Larks.
After knocking off Dodge City 3-1 in a seven-inning non-league game at Brent Gould Field Monday, the Bee Jays traveled to Hays in a key two-game series with the Larks, and after a rough opener, the Bee Jays took Game 2 to preserve their spot in first place in the Rocky Mountain League.
Hays scored early Tuesday and had a 6-0 lead after the second inning.
Hays added another run in the fourth and five more in the fifth to take a 12-0 lead.
Liberal extended its holiday winning streak on the Fourth of July and added a 14th consecutive win Saturday over the Fort Collins Foxes before a 13-inning game ended Liberal’s streak with an 8-6 loss.
Despite falling behind 6-2 against the A’s on the Fourth of July, the Bee Jays rallied late with three runs in the fifth, four in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth to rally for a 12-7 win.
Liberal took advantage of five Dodge City errors and outhit the A’s 14-10.
Another summer, another race between the Liberal Bee Jays and the Hays Larks at the top of the Rocky Mountain Baseball League.
These two teams battled it out when they dominated the Jayhawk League before the eastern teams either got tired of losing or traveling to the west side of the state and bolted.
That temporarily left the Larks and Bee Jays looking for a league home.
Liberal extended its winning streak to nine games in a row and moved into first place of the Rocky Mountain League after a pair of wins in Colorado Wednesday and Thursday.
The Bee Jays won their eighth game in a row Wednesday by completing the season sweep of the Denver Cougars, 17-3.
The Bee Jays belted out 18 hits in the win.
The Cougars were competitive early and tied the game 1-1 in the second inning.
