The Liberal High School Lady Redskin golf team traveled to Hays to participate in the Great Bend Invitational at Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course. The venue was changed from Lake Barton Country Club due to an infestation of mosquitoes at Lake Barton. The par 71 course proved to be a fair, but challenging, test of skills.

Junior Ailynn Anderson from Garden City captured her first individual Gold Medal with a score of 78 (+7). Garden City captured first through fourth place to capture the Team Gold.

GARDEN CITY — After building a 33-7 lead late in the third quarter, the Liberal Redskins had to weather a late surge by the Garden City Buffaloes before coming away with a 39-34 win.

Xavier Tafoya scored first for the Redskins to cap a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.

James Fieser caught a six yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter for a 13-0 lead before the Buffaloes responded with a touchdown drive to cut the lead to 13-7.

The girls tennis team competed in the WAC tennis tournament and finished in 4th overall.

Results:

No. 1 Singles - Evelin Tarango  went  3-1 taking second

No. 2 Singles - Isabella Rodriguez Diaz would take fifth

No. 1 Doubles - Lynette Alonso and Giselle Mesta went 2-2 taking second 

No. 2 Doubles - Maliha Navarro and Yvanna Rivera went 2-2 taking third

“We got off to a rough start and were unable to find a spark that we needed,” Liberal coach Sergio Borjas said. “I know the girls will grow from this and come back ready for regionals.”

The Lady Redskin Golf Team continued their late season blitz of five tournaments in 11 days to close out the 2025 season with a trip to Lakin. This was the third of those five tournaments. The heavy late-season schedule coupled with conflicts in other school activities for some of the players, Coach Bert Luallen took only two golfers to the Lakin Invitational.

The blustery winds sent scores soaring as the field of 49 golfers battled gusts exceeding 40 mph.

“It’s hard to stand up in winds like this, let alone trying to swing a club and hit a golf ball!” Luallen opined.
