The Liberal High School boys swim team competed at Salina in a meet with seven teams last week.

“It was a great meet in which many of our swimmers achieved personal records, by shortening their times,” Liberal head coach Lidia Thomas said.

Liberal finished fifth overall.

Despite trailing by four at half, the Seward County Lady Saints rallied for a 62-59 win to move to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the Jayhawk Conference.

The two teams were tied 9-9 after the first quarter, but Garden City had a 28-24 lead at half.

Seward tied the game 44-44 at the end of the third and outscored the Lady Broncbusters by three in the final period for the win.

Avery Marchino scored 22 points, Trinitee Johnson had 12, Destiny Alexander had 12, and Kimora Fagan had 11.

Most would have believed the game was over at half with Seward trailing Garden City 50-33, but the Saints put together a rally for the ages in the rivalry game between the two teams separated by an hour on Highway 83 and outscored the Broncbusters 59-40 in the second half to escape Garden City with a 92-90 win.

The Saints erased the Broncbuster lead in the first 111 minutes of the second half and took a 66-65 lead after an Awit Mamer lay-up.

The Saints took a nine-point lead with 2:07 to play before the Broncbusters cut the lead to one, 89-88 with 28 seconds to play. But the Saints made three of four free throws late to secure the 92-90 win.

The Redskins and Lady Redskins started the season with a three-game event in Salina, and the results were opposite.

The Redskins opened the season with three losses.

The Redskins opened the season with a 64-42 loss to Salina South, and then had a competitive game against Campus. The Redskins had a fourth quarter lead against the Colts but fell 53-49. The Redskins finished the three-game event with a 66-47 loss the McPherson.
