The Lady Redskin defense dominated for three quarters to force a running clock against the Western Athletic Conference Garden City Lady Buffaloes, and the Lady Redskins cruised to a dominating win without scoring a single point in the fourth quarter, 49-32.

Garden City scored the first four points Tuesday, but the Lady Redskins finished the first quarter on an 18-4 run to take an 18-8 lead. After allowing the first four points, the Lady Redskins didn’t allow another point form Garden City four three-and-a-half minutes, and they forced another two-and-a-half minute drought to end the period.

Liberal and Garden City battled back and forth in the first half of a Western Athletic Conference game Tuesday, but the Redskins committed multiple turnovers and took quick shots in possessions from mid range that didn’t fall in the second half, and the Redskins fell 75-59.

Liberal trailed 6-1 early in the first quarter before putting together a 7-0 run with shots from Eathan Hernandez, James Fieser and a three from Juan Diego to take an 8-6 lead.

Liberal was able to keep the slim lead the rest of the quarter and led 12-10.

Five members of the Liberal Wrestling Club traveled to compete at the Goodland Kids Tournament Saturday, Feb. 15.

Numbers were down at the tournament as a whole due to sickness and weather causing kids to wrestle up in age and weight for this tournament.

“Proud of all the kids and what they accomplished,” Coach Adrian Salas said. “A couple kids had to wrestle in higher age groups/weight divisions but didn’t let that scare them from competing, definitely good experience for them with districts and state around the corner,”

The Lady Saints trailed by a point at halftime Thursday against Colby but took a lead quickly in the second half and continued to outpace the Lady Trojans in a 59-47 win.

Avery Marchino led the Lady Saints with 21 points. Kylee Hunt scored 11, and Kezia Grant-Bobb had 10.

While the Lady Redskins have dropped six games this season, they are still in close contention to host a Sub State tournament for two rounds.

Liberal is currently sitting fifth, and the top four teams will host two games.

By record, Liberal is tied with Wichita East, both at 12-6. But Wichita East has a slight lead on Liberal in point differential margin having a 4.61 margin to Liberal’s 4.33.
