Another summer, another race between the Liberal Bee Jays and the Hays Larks at the top of the Rocky Mountain Baseball League.
These two teams battled it out when they dominated the Jayhawk League before the eastern teams either got tired of losing or traveling to the west side of the state and bolted.
That temporarily left the Larks and Bee Jays looking for a league home.
Liberal extended its winning streak to nine games in a row and moved into first place of the Rocky Mountain League after a pair of wins in Colorado Wednesday and Thursday.
The Bee Jays won their eighth game in a row Wednesday by completing the season sweep of the Denver Cougars, 17-3.
The Bee Jays belted out 18 hits in the win.
The Cougars were competitive early and tied the game 1-1 in the second inning.
The Bee Jays used their ability to hit the deep ball, Denver Cougar errors and a solid weekend of defense to sweep a three-game series and remain a half game behind the Hays Larks in the Rocky Mountain League standings.
Robert Orr provided the shot that ended Game 1 when he sent a pitch deep over the left field fence with two on base in the eighth inning for a walk-off home run in a 12-1 win.
The Bee Jays struck out 15 times in the win, but they also belted out 12 hits.
Liberal returned to Brent Gould Filed Sunday and Monday for a two-game series with Western Nebraska after completing a five-game road trip and came away with a sweep.
The Bee Jays started the road trip with a non-league game at Dodge City and came away with an 8-6 win.
The Bee Jays headed to Western Nebraska for a two-game set and won the first game 12-6 before dropping the second game of the series 12-7.
One rocky inning in the season opener led to a loss for the Liberal Bee Jays to kick off the 2024 season, but better outings at the plate led to back-to-back wins in the final two games of the opening series for a 2-1 start to the season.
Liberal kicked off the season Saturday but only played three-and-a-half innings before a lightning delay and rain led to the game being postponed.
